Measurable Goals and How You Achieve Them
Posted January 8th, 2009 by David BermanI'd like you to think about your current workout routine. Think about the exercises you're doing. Think about the set and rep scheme. Think about how many days per week you are hitting the gym. Think about all of it.
Now answer this question, in light of what you are currently doing - Why are you doing it?
I don't mean this in a rhetorical sense. I actually want you to answer the question. Why are you doing what you are doing?
Motivation MOVES us when we MOVE towards motivation.
Posted January 8th, 2009 by sassyonyxI am moved….to write this for motivation’s sake.
Sometimes I wonder how people see me. Not the outside me, but the inside me. Do they ever see that scared little girl that wants to go into a corner and cry? Do they ever notice the teenage side of me who feels lost and totally awkward at times? Do they see the woman I am, while not seeing the woman I want to become?
Gettin' up there...
Posted January 7th, 2009 by J_dazzle23So....I haven't checked into the blog for a while...but my progress has been slow, but steady and sure. trimming up and losing fat around the middle, while building definition and bulk. All thanks to you wonderful people!!!
Are You Lifting Too Heavy?
Posted January 6th, 2009 by David BermanPicking the "right weight" to work out with isn't always easy.
On the one hand, you don't want to pick a weight that's too light. If you do, then you won't be getting the adaptive response you're looking for (i.e. stronger, hypertrophy, etc.).
On the other hand, you don't want to pick a weight that's too heavy. If you do, then you are very likely to cheat, to use bad form, risk injury, and you also won't be getting the results you are looking for.
As a generalization (sorry for generalizing!) I see more people erring on the side of too heavy.
not so good news.........but I am okay

Baby news....
Current mood: disappointed
Category: Writing and Poetry
Sometimes you just have to accept things and go on. I have avoided talking about this because it hurts. I wondered whether or not to blog this and decided it would be easier than answering all the emails when people keep asking when Kenny and I are getting our baby.
I am resolved to~~~~~~~~~~~
Posted January 2nd, 2009 by sassyonyxFor my 2009, I am resolved to.....
1. I am resolved to focus on the good and not emphasize the bad.
2. I am resolved to be kinder in my actions, with my words, and my approach to others, as well as, myself.
3. I am resolved to love myself more, accepting the things I cannot change, while changing the things I can.
4. I am resolved to be a better wife and help mate, knowing a love like I am blessed with does not happen every day, but once in one's lifetime.
Doing What it Takes
Posted January 1st, 2009 by David BermanI just finished reading Malcolm Gladwell's newest book titled "Outliers". Very highly recommended!
Here's a short summary of what he says:
1. Success (in anything) has a lot more to do with things like when you are born, where you are born, and your heritage (cultural and otherwise) than with "talent".
2. Success requires working very hard (Gladwell uses 10,000 hours as a guidepost).
So, what in the world does this have to do with health and fitness?? Here's what I think.

Someone's LISTENING
Posted December 31st, 2008 by sassyonyxFor all the words you do not speak,
write them down.
Silence and what we hear
in the silence
is often our greatest teacher.
It is said that in order to find solace
we must seek our haven
beyond
where we are standing
and
LISTEN
with our hearts.
YOUR silence
speaks
loudly to me.
It echoes
through my senses
commanding
my attention.
Be all that you can be
because
YOU CAN
and know you are heard
and someone's

Brain Fart
Posted December 29th, 2008 by johnnyI know we posted this topic many times but sometimes with new info coming out I get confused.
When taking Creatine Monohydrate and taking it with a simple sugar what type of sugar and how much sugar?
Some people use Gatorade powder form so for every 5 grams of Creatine how much Gatorade? Is it 1/2 a scoop or 1 scoop is that to much sugar.
Do you use regular white sugar or just stay away from that garbage.
What about Splenda 1 packet per 5 grams of creatine does that make sense?
I heard that Splenda can be toxic to your body...
Are there any other methods people are trying?
The Neglected Intensity Variable
Posted December 29th, 2008 by David BermanThe next time you are in the gym, take a moment to look around. Specifically, I want to you look for people using a workout journal. If your gym is anything like mine, only about 1 out of every 10 people use a journal.
If you get the chance, look to see (or ask them) what they are writing down. Here are some things I've observed: (1) the name of the exercise, (2) the weight they are using each set, (3) the number of reps they complete.
Now take a closer look around the gym and see if you can find anyone that's monitoring the time. For this one, look to see who has a stopwatch (or better yet, a split timer) and is keeping track of both REST intervals as well as WORK intervals.
You'd be lucky to find one person in the whole gym.
And whether you see that person or not, by the end of this post I'm hoping that YOU decide to become that person.
Mastering the Basics
Posted December 27th, 2008 by David BermanWhen you first get involved in something (whether it's learning to play an instrument, or learning how to exercise), everything is new and exciting. Since you don't know anything, you embrace your ignorance and even admit it to others so that you might learn from them. But soon, something different starts to happen - you start to "know" things, and begin to seek out more "advanced" knowledge.
That's usually when things go horribly wrong.
I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with continued learning. We should strive to learn more, but we must do so with wisdom and not haste.

Are you a Holiday cheater?
Posted December 26th, 2008 by johnnySo did you cheat ?
How much did you cheat ?
What did you choose to eat for your Holiday cheat treat(S) ?
I was pretty boring as my wife said: no drinking, no treats, no junk what so ever. I stuck with my chicken breast and salad dinner. My sweet treat ready for this was a extra lite PROTEIN BAR after my dinner!!!!!
But you know what I was extremly happy with what I chose, no regrets...
