What do you study?

What style do you currently study? Why do you like it? What do you like least about it? (If such a thing exists).

Have you studied anything besides that?

Just curious! Everyone loves their style for different reasons
-------------------

I used to study Zen Karate Do. It's a Canadian born mix of Shotokan Karate (hands and self defense) Tae Kwon Do (feet) and Kick Boxing (modernization). It originated in Saskatchewan and is mostly based in Western Canada with several different schools over the provinces.

We had/have a teacher with 35 yrs of experience who is also a volunteer police officer. It was a lot of fun and felt fairly balanced. It was/is fairly modern in terms of fighting/sport style and very traditional with the hard style forms. There is also a lot of cardiovascular training involved. The first half of class is an intense warmup. The second half is anything from sparring, forms or training in kicks/punches etc. We did tournaments every year and rarely did someone not come back with 1st 2nd or 3rd place in both sparring and forms. (I personally did better in forms :)

I would have liked it if they could have incorporated more modern techniques such as gymnastics like flips and flamboyant weapons demonstrations. (Ala kung fu or American style karate) but this sort of went against the grain of "traditional" karate forms. The forms don't look bad but I've seen some very cool stuff with weapons and flips that seem to be useful to know.

Other than that, I love it! Everyone is so nice and like a family. Competitions are friendly and fun and people seem to have a good attitude!

BJJ and Kick Boxing / Muay Thai

I started in TKD, a friend presented that martial art when I was 14 years old, then did it for about 6 years, and stopped due to knee injury. After some time without doing anything, just lifting some weights I came back to martial arts world, doing MMA and Submission, now I’m more focused in BJJ and do some Kick Boxing / Muay Thai too.

I'm Hooked

Got back into martial arts a couple years ago and have been studying both Krav Maga and Kenpo Karate since. I'm hooked! Training is probably the thing I look forward to most during the week.... wait, is that sad??? ;)

Muay Thai !!

I've started with muay thai (errrr Kickboxing) at 12, and then now I'm doing some CSW (Combat submission wrestling) along with muay thai (kickboxing), overally i have 6 years of experience, I like it becuase its probably the most solid stand up-striking art of its time, not bieng chauvenistic just sayin of how it evolved, and became an integral part of MMA (Mixed martial arts), and also to point out how much it is as a condition-based art, a beginner has to go through numerous cardio and muscle-strengthing workouts to get into shape before he/she even learns a propper stance, so i'd say that's the reason why I like it because its very physical rather than other/if not most arts (karate, TKD, etc) which don't concentrate much on physical fitness, not litteraly meaning that.....but ahhhh tired of typing here, its nap time....goodnight

The "Hook"

My family started me off. It seems everyone in my family has boxed, so it seemed only natural for me to do the same. After boxing for years I started doing Muay Thai and some grappling, did that ever open my eyes! I fell in love with grappling, joined a gym that specialized in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and five years later coach for that same gym and train everyday. I now fight in MMA events and compete often in grappling and jiu jitsu tournaments. Never have I participated in something more compelling and intense in my life, and as long as I can remain fit and healthy I'll keep competing.

I don't know what it is

I don't know what it is about martial arts that just hooks people. They find the right style and then just love it! Add on some weights and some competing and who would want to stop? :D Nobody in the US would be overweight if they could join a martial arts club :)

Well my introduction into

tripletdad's picture

Well my introduction into self-defense began at an early age. My dad taught me how to box and would spar with me. Then I saw a Bruce Lee movie and was forever hooked. I got into a Kenpo Karate class, took Aikido and was fortunate enough to be introduced to a man certified to teach Jeet Kune Do. This is the art that Bruce Lee developed and I loved it. It takes techniques from so many places and basically encourages you to pick and choose and add what works for you. Full contact sparring and physical training are a huge part of the art. I have had the privilege to meet and train with people from various arts and love the exchange of techniques and ideas. I am also an avid reader and constantly studying anything on the arts be it mental or physical. I have also started taking Krav Maga and hope to also begin training in the internal Chinese arts thanks to my friend Brian Robinson.
I love the bond between martial artists. Being able to sit down and talk with a true martial artists is great.

Amen, it's like a big

Amen, it's like a big family. How can it not be when you take someone by the collar and slam them to the floor? Then turn around and laugh about it. You kind of share something :)

LOL! Yeah there's nothing

LOL! Yeah there's nothing like dinner with Sensei right after he has knocked you unconcious with an elbow. Ah such sweet memories!
