Sushi

I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on sushi. Pros, cons, healthy, not, favorite kind?

I love sushi. I think it is healthy and tastes great. Being part Japanese, I like traditional nigirizushi - the fish over the rice. I am not a big fan of the rolls that are out there. I think it is good to adapt cultures and foods to certain areas but when you have some of those crazy rolls out there with different sauces and ingredients I believe it goes against the natural flavors of food which is an important element of Japanese cuisine.

I agree, you want to eat the best quality sushi available. Nothing is worse than bad fish (well I am sure there are some worse things...) Anyhow, as I am sure you already know, Tuna is very healthy for you and Tuna is one of the more popular fish used in traditional sushi recipes. However, there are 100 different kinds of sushi, all with different preparation methods and types of ingredients. Personally, I am not a big fan of raw fish in sushi, since I am a bit leery of bacteria, and where I live it would be nearly impossible to get fish fresh enough to put in sushi. I do like California rolls a lot, but I am sure most sushi enthusiasts would scoff at them :-)

i luv sushi tons, all kinds! but when my trainer told me i couldn't eat white rice i was bummed thinking about sushi since most of the dishes i tried were based with an ample amount of white rice, but i was at the store recently. They have a sushi guy there making fresh stuff and i noticed they had some brown rice tuna rolls. Seemed pretty good since all it is tuna and brown rice. I think the key is portioning cause they can stuff you at the bar for sure!

Personally I love sushi, but only if it's really good sushi. If it's not top quality I'm not a big fan. I've had some sushi at some fast food type sushi places and i didn't like it at all, but at some top sushi restaurants it is ridiculously good. My favorite kind are Spider Rolls (crab). I could eat like 30 of those things, mmm.

How healthy they are depends on the roll, and it varies a lot. Check this site out:

Not sure if you have access to a Trader Joe's, but they have brown rice rolls. They're basic, but yummy. I haven't found any other places that carry them, but I imagine Whole Foods or Wild Oats might have something similar.
