Protein Powder.

ArbiterChrono's picture

Okay!

Here's the question.

Which protein powder should I buy.
There are just too many brands out there, and I don't know which are good and which are garbage.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks.

A

protein supplement suggestion

I'm a new poster (previously a lurker) and just wanted to contribute my two cents about what’s been working for me in terms of getting as much protein as possible. I've been drinking a protein shake called Nutribody-- I happened upon its website through a blog, iirc. I have much more energy—-my workouts improved considerably when I started drinking it-- and am just generally more lucid. Yay protein! The best part is that it’s totally hypoallergenic and contains no dairy products for those lactose-intolerant among us (dairy tends to leave my stomach unsettled). As a vegetarian it's also really difficult for me to subsist on my LC diet, but this has made it much smoother. I’m definitely a believer and encourage you to try it. It's made from pea and brown rice proteins.

Awesome contributions

Awesome contributions Oddball, a ton of great information!

I typically recommend that people use a Whey Protein Isolate if their goal is to build lean muscle mass while shedding excess fat. This material is perfect during this cutting stage, since Whey Protein Isolates contain no fat, no carbohydrates, and offer a high protein and amino profile per serving. Whey Isolates are also the best tasting and mixing protein materials currently available on the market.

If you are looking for similar results using a less expensive material, you may consider using a Whey Protein Concentrate. WPC is higher in fat and carbs, but for the price will produce similar results. If you find a pure WPC, you can get as much as 80% protein per serving.

Hydrolyzed proteins are excellent for post-workout nutrition, since they have been pre-digested to break down the amino peptide strands for faster absorbtion to increase muscle growth and recovery sooner. Hydro proteins tend to be extremely bitter and difficult to mix though, but for individuals looking for the best results, it is worth the decrease in taste and mixibility.

Either of those three options will work great if you are dieting to lose weight and build lean muscle. If you are looking to put on bulk mass, you may consider going more towards the wholefoods MRP route, ie some form of weightgainer mix. Weightgainers and MRPs will mix a combination of proteins, carbs, and healthy Omega-3 fats geared towards healthy weight gain and muscle recovery. Sample weightgainers include Muscle Milk, or the Myo Milk Formula available in the Pre-Mix Solutions section on www.trueprotein.com.

If you are looking for a natural alternative, happen to be allergic / intolerant to milk and dairy products, or are vegetarian / vegan, you may consider using a vegetable based protein powder as well. There are now more and more of these products being made available on the market. Samples include Pea proteins, Rice proteins, Hemp proteins, or Soy proteins. These proteins are still complete protein strands despite what many people believe, and have amino profiles similar to a Whey Protein Concentrate. The taste and mixibility of these materials will differ from that of a Whey Protein, but they have a large market appeal to individuals that prefer non-animal based protein products. Each of these protein alternatives are available at the lowest costs at www.trueprotein.com.

Hope the additional information helps, and I am more than happy to answer any additional questions as well!

I'm glad I asked!!

I'll definitely be investing in some isolate at least!

Thanks for all the great info!

Hey Arbiter, I know it

OddBall91's picture

Hey Arbiter,

I know it realy difficult to choose some good protein, since, like you said, there are just to many brands out there. Well there are also different kinds of protein powder.

1) Isolate
2) Concentrate
3) Hydrolysate

Isolate protein contain the most % of protein of al kinds, mostly 83% or more per 100 grams. Concentrate is little bit lower, about 73% or more per 100 grams, it also contains some fats and carbohydrates.

Hydrolysate is a protein which is already broken down into amino acids, like BCAAs, only smaller. These are also the fastest when it comes to digestion because the body doesn't need to break them down much more.

However, if you are looking for a fast recovery for muscle mass i would still go for the Isolate protein, or a mix of isolate and concentrate.

Here are some examples of brands with good quality protein:

1) Universal - Ultra Whey Pro
2) Dymatise - Elite Whey
3) Opimum - 100% Gold Standard
4) BSN - Syntha-6
5) Revolutions - Whey Shake
6) Dorian Yates - Ultimate Protein Formula
7) BSN - Lean Desert Protein
8) NVE Pharmacheuticals - Stacker W
9) M Double You - Bulk Whey
10) Peak Body Nutrition - Protein Mania

Just see what price they are and what you could afford.. hope this helps...

Good Luck!

This helps a LOT!

The main on I was looking at trying was the Opimum - 100% Gold Standard. (I wanted to try the rootbeer float one...)
But I didn't know which ones were good. (I mean, I've researched it quite a bit and figured a purer protein would be better than a weight gainer, but it's hard to tell how much filler is in these products.)

Not nessecarely, Some

OddBall91's picture

Not nessecarely, Some situations a weight gainer might be good aswell, it realy depends on your goals. Some people would like to gain weight without careing if they'd increase their bodyfat by much. For such people a weight gainer could be ideal since it can help you to get the extra amount of calories to grow.

However, some people rather have an increase of lean muscle mass. For these people i would recomment a basic protein powder suplement.

As you know there are different kinds of bodies, known as the extomorph, mesomorph and endomorph.

For an ectomorph i would suggest a good weight gainer, such as mammoth from interactive nutrition or Mutant Mass from PVL Nutrition.

For an endomorph i would stick to a protein powder since endomorph can gain fat mass much faster then any other type of body.

An Mesomorph could try both, however i would recomment a protein powder, maybe a weight gainer post workout.

Looking at youre pictures i would deffenitly say you are an ecomorph, so why not try both? See what works best for you. Ectomorphs can eat a lot more carbohydrates, and this also helps them to gain mass faster. If you realy want to add mass, i would suggest taking Mutant Mass from PVL Nutrition and take 130 grams twice a day. I known, if you check the suplement fact you'd see its much, but believe me, you can take it..

Good luck!

I think

ArbiterChrono's picture

I might try it.

I don't want to go nuts. (every one has a budget right?) But I think I'll do as you have suggested.

Thanks for the advice!

I can't

ArbiterChrono's picture

I can't seem to find that particular product around here. Do you know of any other good weight gainers? (I'd also like to try one that isn't in a 15lb bag to make sure I like it.)

Thanks.

Mammoth 2500 from

OddBall91's picture

Mammoth 2500 from Interactive Nutrition ain't that bad, cuz its been chosen as canada's best weight gaining, who knows how many times.

True Mass from BSN is a realy good calorie bomb, however quite expensive for the amount of shakes you can get out of it.

And of course, if youre realy looking to add mass, fast, go for Gain Fast from Universal..
It has only 6 scoops per container, enough to last about a week. Containing 3100 calories per shake! hehe i would never try something extreme like this myself though, since i know my body will turn most of it into bodyfat..

Check http://universalsportvoeding.nl/shop/images/1211ing.jpg for the nutrients list.

"Eat Like A Horse, Train like An Animal, Sleep Like A Baby And Grow Like A Weed"

That's crazy!

ArbiterChrono's picture

That Gain fast is a little to extreme for me. (If I remember correctly it's not good to but any kind of weight on to quickly, and my body would probably just turn most of it into fat or just burn it off.)

Mammoth looks pretty good. I might go with true mass though. (I think I can get it locally.)

Thanks for the info!
