Eating & training for the discus
Many of you have read my past forums concerning my diet & training programs for overall mass gaining with no real regard for how I looked:

Well things have changed just a bit. Now that i'm back throwing the discus, I need to pack on some mass while maintaining my flexibility. Not only that, but I have to train for power, while increasing overall speed as well. I should mention here that the current National record in St. Kitts is just over 41 meters. Now i'm not new to this type of training but i've changed a lot of things, namely my eating habits... this, i'll gladly share.
First of all, I won't be eating between 6 & 9 meals a day like I used to do. I'll be eating alot less. As for my training, i'll be doing more or less power movements. Just keep in mind that this is only my lifting routine that i'll be specific about... maybe ill consider sharing my complete training regime including throwing & plyometrics, etc.
For now, this is my lifting routine:
Sunday
power cleans (warmups) - 5x5
deadlift - 5x5 as heavy as possible from here with strict form
bent over rows - 5x5
leg curls or stiff legged deadlifts - 5x5
back hyper extentions - 5x5
Tuesday
bench press (warmups) - 2 sets
bench press - 5x5 as heavy as possible from here with strict form
shoulder press - 5x5
dumbell pullovers - 5x5
bicep curls - 5x5
tricep press - 5x5
Wednesday
power snatch (warmups) - 5x5
squats or leg press - 5x5 as heavy as possible from here with strict form
weighted walking lunges - 5 sets of 8 steps with 45lb plate
calf raises - 5x5
abs (either obligue crunches or walking weighted lunge twists) - 5x5 then finish up with standing twists with squat bar.
Other than lifting, I throw on Tuesdays & Wednesdays only... for now.
Diet - I eat 3 square meals per day plus a weight gainer just before bedtime - 3-4 hours apart:
B/fast
1 cup rolled oats in water
1 glass juice with l-glutamine
2-3 eggs
1 tble flax seed oil
glucosomine tabs
Lunch
3-4 cups mixed (sweet potato/yams)
1 chicken breast
1 cod liver oil cap
1 animal pak
Snack
either a thick peanut butter sand. with cheese with 1 cod liver oil cap
or
chicken kabob pita with 1 cod liver oil cap
Just before bed
4 scoops cytogainer in 2 cups of 1% milk + 1/2 scoop l-glutamine
Here's a list of my supplements:
CytoG - one serving just before bedtime
L-glutamine - i've been on the same bottle for over 3 months now. I figure it's about a 6-month supply
Animal Pak - 1 pack per day, but not every single day (one tub lasts me at least 2 months)
L-arginine - for creatine absorption, taken with the celltech &/or before meals
Celltech - either first thing in the morning on non-training days or immediately after training
Glucosomine - you know why!
Flax seed oil - before breakfast
Cod liver oil - might take 1 or 2g's before lunch


It's been 2 weeks
It's been 2 weeks since i've posted anything. But that's for a very good reasons. Many things have happened since then, lots of changes. Needless to say, i'm still training hard as hell, but just not doing discus training. It's been a good run & i've enjoyed every minute of this. But unfortunately, it must end here. Thank you all for your support... i'll let you know what's up with me over the next few weeks.

Today was my last day at work so I took a chance & ate as much as possible since I knew it would be a slow day. For some reason I think I achieved putting on another 2lbs this week. I'll know for sure by Sunday, but I definately feel heavier right now! And as soon as I get that new brand of glucosomine, it's on again! Until then, I think i'll drop my weights again until I get some ease from my shoulder... maybe i'll drop to about 80% since I don't want to go too low.

I've heard mixed studies on glucosamine chondroiton with mixed "others". like gluc+msm or gluc+hyalauronic-acid, and some others but im not sure which is the best.

Unfortunately last Friday was the last day I was able to eat that well. It was the last day at that job. As of Monday I started a new job & i've been training there all week, not making training (the gym/discus) or eating a priority. I'll have to take a break from posting my meal plan for a while until I get my act right again. As for the glucosomine, i'm using a brand caled webber naturals & unfortunately when I bought it I didn't know enough about joint issues to know that I need msm as well. This doesn't have any & i'm not about to spend another $20 on just that! So, i'm looking for another brand that I can get here in Canada. I'm sure you saw what Brian recommended... it's not sold here... osteo bi-flex. If not that, then i'll try the Animal flex. Which reminds me... I need to ask Bobby how come all of a sudden he's all about Animal products.

Today was another cold day, but luckily it wasn't too cold that I was uncomfortable like I was yesterday. When I got to the gym I didn't feel like training at all. But once I got warmed up, I was cool. I just have to make sure I drink lots of water tonight since I had that red wine after dinner so my legs don't cramp up later. I pushed them really hard today & i'm sure i'll feel it in the a.m. Anyway, i'm about to take an early night. I'll have to wake up to take that shake!

I have to learn to focus on one thing at a time then moving onto the next thing - alot on my mind recently too. Sometimes I wish I was still bodybuilding instead of just trying to get stronger. For some reason it's not quite as complicated... although I know i'd be hurting a hell of alot more. Oh well, bed time!

Some days are challenging in terms of eating, I would admit. I seem to do more eating on my off-days because of the time aspect. I'm still trying to find a rhythm I can stick to though... well I was. And now I have to find another tune to dance to with this new job.

I was doing some reading up on l-arginine & apparently it helps absorb not just creatine, but l-glutamine as well. As for whether I believe it, yes I do. Because ever since i've added more to my daily diet my strength has been going through the roof even more. As you can see I didn't throw today. This was because the people at my new job asked that I come in on short notice & it threw everything off today, including my eating. I just was not prepared for it.
But aside from all that, i'm still weighing 204lbs & my strength has not faltered in anyway. It's still increasing, but at a slower rate now. Instead of increasing by 20-40lbs per exercise, I seem to be increasing at 10-15lb intervals. I just have this funny feeling that it will increase as I begin to eat more over this coming holiday season... just as it did last year. That's it for now. Stay tuned for the next episode...

Hey...
I know, I know... you're totally right on your call. The thing is that after taking my celltech right after training I have to then walk home & that takes about a half hour. Once I get home, I try to eat a meal instead. Then i'll take the protein just before bed. The main reason is that i'm trying not to depend on protein sup. as much, but to use real food. BUT... recently I haven't been doing a very good sticking to that rule, especially since my appetite seems to be increasing again (body calling for more calories). In addition, I haven't had much time recently to put towards cooking like before because of work, etc. And speaking of celltech, you will realize that I cut that down to just training days. The other sups are just for maintainence. You'll see what I mean when you see today's post... I appreciate your good eye. Damn you're good!

Hey!
It's a number of things really. As you see I haven't even posted my meals since last weekend. Right now i'm in transition moving from one job to the next. There's some paper work that's getting in the way of my training schedule, but i'd rather have a new job than complain about missing training first of all. Know what I mean? One minute they want to see me, the next some other bullshit. Getting this job tookl me 6 weeks, but i'm grateful for it... so now I can eat more food! Also, transportation is a huge issue too. Because I depend on transit, it takes me a while to get from one place to the next.
As for the food I eat, that just depends on whether i'm able to cook. It's not laziness at all! Sometimes I just take my own carbs to work & get a small piece of chicken breast. Most times I take my own chicken. The pita is just my reward for sticking to it... 'cause remember I don't need to be very strict on calories. So yea, it just depends on the situation that will dictate the availability of food. But 90% of the time, it's food from my own kitchen.
Once I start this new job i'll have to work on a brand new schedule anyway. So look out for more changes within the next few weeks. And as always bro, thanks for your concern. It is appreciated! How are things with you down there?

I decided to do day 2 of my lifting today because I don't know what's going to happen with regards to training for this whole week. My work schedule has been changed to accomodate my manager. We're short-staffed & it's an opportunity for me. Anyway, I got to the gym fairly late today & because of it I wasn't able to complete my workout. The good thing about that is that i've been able to maintain my strength. The bad thing, i've lost some weight... which i'm sure you suspected if you've been following my dailies.
On another note, tomorrow is my last interview for this new job. I've had three up to now. Wish me luck!

Unfortunately I didn't get to finish my whole routine today. Although, I was able to clean 205lbs for 2 reps after failing twice! In comparison to just 5 years years ago, I was able to clean 225lbs & deadlift 515lbs. Right now i'm struggling to deadlift 315lbs. That just means that my overall explosive power has improved over the years. I'm still pissed about not getting to finish though...

It's a little bit strange to me how fast i'm geting in the discus ring now. I've been turning so fast in the ring that i'm losing control of everything. Half of that is attributed to my shoes, which are fast spinners to begin with. So i'm now faced with having to control my power & speed by trying to relax a bit. You know that saying "power is nothing without control?" Well that's my biggest issue right now. Unfortunately, it just means I need more throwing time. But I can't schedule it in because of my working hours. I'll find a way. Remember last week when I said I was starting to not know my own strength? I predicted this would happen... & again, I haven't even started my speed training!
Next wee, I go back to where I left off 2 weeks ago in terms of the poundage I used in the weight room. I can't wait to start throwing around some heavy weight again. This week has been too easy for me (although necessary). lol

Now i'm sure you guys remember how painful it was for me last year getting to & from training... walking in -degree weather. Well today was basically the first day of many to come for this season. The worse part is that my throwing coach has decided that we'll continue throwing outside until snow is on the ground. Yea right!! I won't get into too much detail about this except to say that throwing a steel discus in freezing weather is not fun. Especially when freezing rain is flying accross your face as if the earth was tilted. There's a picture for you. For me, it was more of a challenge staying warm than it was maintaining my form during my throws.

Training: so I used 60-75% of my max weight on every single exercise today & it felt extremely good! In fact, it felt so good that I was able to finish my workout at least a 1/2 hour earlier... I usually take about 2 hrs. After training I weighed myself at 206lbs with clothes on. So i'm guessing that i'm about 204lbs or there-about. Not that important actually. I'll continue training lighter for the rest of this week to continue giving myself a break from the extreme heavy weights, then i'll hit those bad boys again next week Sunday. My plan is to do the exact weights I did before my week off last week, then i'll (try to)increase the following week. I'm hoping that my body will respond by just getting stronger... everything in time, yet carefully pushing myself every week.
And i'm so excited because I may have my second interview tomorrow for that job i'm going after... WHO HOOOO!!
