What do you do ?

willbefit's picture

You are in the gym working out, or on a piece of cardio equipment, and you see someone giving it their all day in and day out, but their form is just not the way it should be. Do you approach them, getting out of your own zone of training so that they don't hurt themselves. Do you just keep focused on what you are doing, and if they are still going at it when you are done, then approach them. Some people do not like to be bothered when they are training. So what would you do ?

Thanks for the comments guys...

I think next time I will just approach them and ask if I could give them a tip, like I was once given (by a hired trainer).

Gym Etiquette

First consider your relationship with the person - Do they know you, and if so, are they the type of person that would be open to some advice? Next, consider the rules of the gym - if there are trainers on the floor, perhaps you can engage one of them and point the person out and express your concern. Believe it or not, not everyone is open to taking advice, even if it's potentially good for them. Rest assured, many of us "feel your pain" - if you've been in the gym for a while, you've seen people like that. The final answer to the question will probably come down to your own heart and your philosophy.

I have to agree with David

I have to agree with David on this one...

If there is anything I can't stand its bad gym ettiquete and bad form but in this day and age unless someone approaches you on how to train correctly, its best to let them do what they are doing. Obviously if you work in the gym as a floor walker then its your business to possibly intervene.

Best thing you can do is let them get a glimpse of your training form and maybe they can see from your results and lack of theirs they twig that maybe they are doing something wrong.

Of course you do, he's got his Masters in Physical therapy! Haha. But he is very true. I know a lot of people , at least when I say something, they dont like it. That's probably just me :) But seriously im working on that.

Or you could just tell them, they'll thank you later. Its just human nature to be defensive for most peole, and its getting worse as we get older. Thats why Jamos attitude and many like him are things i strive for. But first i have to appreciate myself b4 i can expect someone to appreciate me, or rather what i tell them

But consider the person themselves... Just last week I saw a kid walking around looking lost in the gym & trying to push weights he so obviously couldn't move. I looked over & noticed that the weights were falling off the bar & advised him to use the safety clips. After walking around for another 10 mins, I gave him one of mine to use while I took a break & told him that if he needed any help at all he should ask me. He then told me that it was his first time there. He was 17 years old. Sometimes you have to approach people even though they look stupid training the way they do, even if you don't talk about the exact thing they're doing wrong. Why? Because for the rest of my time there, I saw this guy watching me & doing what I did (although I can't claim to have perfect form either). lol

it might actually be harsh in their opinion to show them the right way,,, but coz we care and we r learning the right moves n all here(MFT)... so i guess for me if i have feeling that the person will listen to me and do it i will approach him... What do u do with people who been training for years yet they r not in shape and still with wrong moves??? its a complicated one... you gotta hit them from a point such as ,, doing the wrong move wont give them results fast or it will make them tired fast so they wont be able to continue their schedule for that day .... Hope that i gave some solutions :) ,,
