Afraid of food! The too-few calorie scare!

will_i_am's picture

So MFT'ers. Its come to my attention that you have a few groups of people when it comes to weight loss. You have those that just want to hear justification for what they're already doing , and that they'll make great success on their half-ass workout schedule and half-ass unhealthy meal plan.

Then you yhave those that are serious and committed. And maybe some inbetween.
Those that are serious seem to be afraid to eat too many calories, and I can't blame them! They're on a roll losing weight, or they're just getting started but too few calories can be just as bad unfortunately.

Im helping a good friend get on track and stay healthy, and he's dedicated more than ever. I prepared a meal plan for him that's efficient and convienent. I asked him what his typical day looks like as of right now and this is his meal plan.

Friend's Current weight: 217 lbs
Friend's Goal weight: 200 lbs

7:30am - 2 poached egg whites and turkey bacon - or - a bowl of Kashi Go Lean Cereal
11:30am - 2 turkey roll-ups (turkey rolled in romaine lettuce)
1:00pm - Chicken Ceaser Salad and Sugar free Jello
3:00pm - Bowl of Kashi - or if I'm on the road I will eat another South Beach Protein Bar
6:30pm - Chicken Breat, Broccoli/aspparagus
8:30pm - Sugar Free Jello or Popcorn

I emailed a reply to him and I will post that later in a comment, but I would like to hear your guys/gals opinions.
Thanks guys/gals!

To keep it consistent at first, so that he has roughly the same type of meal, I manipulated what he already had. I added suggestions, here are the suggestions I provided him:

7:30am - 2 poached egg whites and turkey bacon - or - a bowl of Kashi Go Lean Cereal
Egg Whites are 17 calories, and pack 3.5g protein each so if you want to afford it, throw in quite a few more, possibly 6-7 or even 9. 6 eggwhites is about 100 calories; 9 is about 150. Add that with your turkey bacon and you'll see you've about 200 calories if that, depending on how many slices you eat. Your biggest meal of the day should be breakfast, and 400 calories isn't too big.

11:30am - 2 turkey roll-ups (turkey rolled in romaine lettuce)
wow! great meal! turkey breast is a lean source of protein, so you can pile it on. go for about 350 calories at least. throw in some raw veggies if you want more to munch on

1:00pm - Chicken Ceaser Salad and Sugar free Jello
Another great meal. Adding in chicken to that salad is a sure fire way to boost your metabolism and help you build muscle. I would cut the casesar dressing, it packs a mighty 150 calories and lots of fat per serving.

3:00pm - Bowl of Kashi - or if I'm on the road I will eat another South Beach Protein Bar
Try this. Kashi on steroids. I love to do this if im eating cereal for my breakfast, take a scoop of whey protein and throw it into your milk! BAM! Great source of extra protein and now you've got an awesome healthy meal, and great sources to help burn fat, feel full and best of all it will definitely promote muscle growth/strength which helps burn mroe calories.

6:30pm - Chicken Breat, Broccoli/aspparagus
FREAK HEALTHY! This meal is awesome. I call it freak healthy if a bodybuilder could eat it precontest. I would actually switch this to your last meal of the day, or have it for both meals. Make sure the chicken breast is big and if you want to throw spices on the veggies, that's great, and calorie free. YOu dont have to worry about sodium, in my opinion, when eating this healthy and being this active.

8:30pm - Sugar Free Jello or Popcorn
Popcorn is such a great snack! Try the 94% Fat free flavors I suggested and you've got the healthiest snack ever! haha! If you're ever at work and dont have much time to cook but are in your office for whatever reason or on the way to your car, pop a bag. It's only 260 calories, little fat, 10g of fiber and something like 8-10g of protein. TO boost the protein profile, drink a protein shake with it or eat some beef jerky, or maybe you have a chicken breast with you? Its very convienent to buy these little tuna packets at walmart, they're more expensive but if it helps you stay on track.

Again...

I have a bit of a problem with this because if he DOESN'T eat Kashi for breakfast, he is literally going without carbs for 2/3 of the entire day, starting with breakfast...hard to function that way, especially when he's not competing and would be able to drop fat with carbs in his diet. Energy levels will likely be poor...

Plus, he doesn't have to drop the caesar dressing because there isn't much fat in the day either...
I can plug this in to figure out the exact numbers, but it's pretty easy to see just looking at the plan itself...no??

poor carbs

will_i_am's picture

they get such a bad rep.
thanks brian!

did you check out the meal plan i actually made for him ?
i' did overlook the fact that his breakfast had no carbs. it was a quick glance mistake. i'll make sure to mention to him. im not a carb hater so dont get me wrong, just an accident :D i swear!

and as for the fats, i'll make sure that if he sticks with his meal plan, but with our changes, that his snacks are a variety and include at least one handfuls of nuts (which are in MY meal plan for him) throughout the day; possibly some avacados in his salad if he makes it at home, and cooks with olive oil.

Weight loss

Brian Zehetner's picture

I assume he's losing weight on this plan...yes??
VERY low in carbohydrates and fats!! I bet he forgets that he's trying to lose weight...his brain is probably yearning for some sugar!! Unless his portions are ridiculously huge (which is unlikely), this guy needs to up both macronutrients to reasonable levels.

Pretty unbalanced...

variety is the key...

to nutrition.. but also keeping it simple at first. i personally like having people eat lots of fruit as its a great so so so so so healthly snack and it couldn't be more "nature-made" convenient.

check out the meal plan i whipped up for him.... i think you'll likey

I should add that I have provided him a meal plan in the first email that entails lots of fruit and veggies: here it is:

Meal 1 [530 calories]
6oz of oatmeal (dry weight )
7 egg whites OR 4 whites, 1 yolk OR 1 1/2 scoops whey
1 Serving of strawberries
1 tablespoon Flaxseed (to put into your oatmeal. or 1 tablespoon Cocoa powder with splenda)

Meal 2 [350 calories]
Protein shake Pure whey (2 scoops)
1 apple (medium to large)

Meal 3 [520 calories]
1 chicken breast (4-5 ounces cooked)
6 oz of brown rice (cooked)
1-2c broccoli
1 apple (medium to large)

Meal 4 [425 calories]
protein shake same as meal 2
1 ounce nuts

Meal 5 [350 calories]
6 oz of Chicken or fish or shrimp (cooked)
1 serving of salad (use salsa or balsamic vinegarette as dressing.. if you need to use a light dressing, make sure its fewer than 30-40 calories per serving, and use just one serving)

2 scoop of whey in water
1-2 cups Fibrous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower)

My opinion ..

Jamo Nezzar's picture

is this diet is on the way to be cleaned up ..this guy wants to lose weight but he needs guidance so some meals are pretty good and others pretty average , He just need to tighten it up a bit and he should be fine but overall its ok .

yeah buddy!

will_i_am's picture

yeah. he's in good hands now. I like that his diet was, as far as pretty healthy goes, his diet was alright for just making it up himself.

i told him i want him to be friends with carbs (or calories) and not be "a-scared" of them becuase some people fall into that trap and they end up getting too few calories, which isnt a good thing

i told him to get on MFT.com and start blogging here. we have here the most important concept, the family/community of same-goal oriented/lifestyle people.

you could have the worlds best nutrition/diet plan.
you could have the worlds best workout/training program.
you could have the worlds best training.
but without CARING family/friends you would have nothing. if you arent able to stick to it and stay consistent ( :D which you can easily do here along with the first 3 things) then you won't be successful.
