Allergies, Sinus Congestion: Herbal remedies
Posted May 4th, 2008 by will_i_am
Hey guys/gals!
I've been sick the past week with sinus/congestion in my chest, felt like fluid build up of flem and crap in my chest. A smokers cough were my other symptoms along with stuffed nose. Its that time of year again.
What type of remedies are there?
As you all know, except the newbies.... =)... im against medicinal prescription drugs and thigns like tylenol, advil, etc.
Im stubborn and maybe thats why im still sick (since I wont take meds) but something has to help.
Drink lots of fluids...
Teas...
What else really helps clear it up?
Where's our Doc at? :D

Yo
Hey Will, you know what natural remedies I found works for allergies? NOTHING! Seriously man, I have tried almost everything. I had access to all of the products at a natural health supplements manufacturer and nothing I tried in their product line has ever worked for me. The one thing that worked for a short while was high doses of vitamin C up to 1gram a day. But I wouldn't recommend that for anyone without the supervision or express consent of a doctor. And it didn't really work for very long anyway.
Now I heard some rumors that Vitamin D might help with allergies and based on a bunch of other purported health benefits, I've been supplementing vitamin D the last year or so since I probably don't get enough sunshine to make enough of my own, and I don't really drink milk and I've noticed SO FAR that my allergies haven't hit me as badly yet. Now the orchards are blooming right now here, and everything else looks like it is too, so I guess we'll see if it is really working or not over the next couple of weeks. So maybe vitamin D will work? We'll see. I'm taking a pretty low dosage supplement right now until I can see what my levels are at (too much can be bad too).
On the pharmaceutical side of things, I've tried tons of the different OTC remedies and none of those really helped either. In fact, they all seemed to cause like a "rebound reaction" where my allergies came back 10x worse when I wasn't taking them, it even got so bad I got allergic conjunctivitis spontaneously one time. So I stopped taking them all together and noticed the symptoms went back down to a manageable level. Anyhow, in the last 5 years they've seemed to subside quite a bit, but I've been eating a lot healthier and such and we'll see if this vitamin D works any wonders this year.
Now if you're sick, you know there's not much you can do other than get to the doctor and see if they are going to recommend some antibiotics if it is a bacterial infection or if they're going to get you to just tough it out.
Hope you get better soon though bro, I sympathize!
hey will,
during a high allergy season, limit any fermented products: dairy, cheeses, mushrooms, etc... especially if you are allergic to mold.
Remember also that whey contains fermented cheese and peanut butter contains whey.
I have noticed that I am 100% better off during peak seasons just by eliminating certain foods.
Hope you feel better soon.
An old singer's remedy is honey water for a sore throat and zinc lozengers. The warm honey water takes the lactic acid out of the chords and you aren't as puffy and swollen.
Don't use lemon though. It is costic and burns the chords.
Zinc is WONDERFUL!
Hugs 2 U!
Teri

i heard eliminating milk was a good idea, sounds like its true :D
