Do cardio activities realy slow down you're body from building muscle and does it realy burn muscle as fast as they say it does?

Hi MFTribers,

This time it's a question:

Do cardio activities realy slow down you're body from building muscle and does it realy burn muscle as fast as they say it does?

I've been wondering this because now i'm starting to workout again for ganing muscle mass, nice my summer holidays from school are over. It seems that my bodyfat increases faster then my lean body mass, meaning, my bodyfat percentage will increase. So now i wanted to add maybe 20 minutes of cardio per training to keep my bodyfat at bay..

Now I've been wondering, do cardiovascular activities realy slow down building fat free body mass? Or is this claim everrated? Also, is it possible that when doing cardio like the treatmill or stationairy bike, my body tents to burn muscle? ( i know it can) By this i mean, does it realy burn muscle as fast as some people claim in magazines like Muscle & Fitness ans Flex. Here they are always talking about you're body burning muscle when you're not eating before you sleep and also when doing cardio in you're 'cutting' phase aswell as in you're 'bulking' phase.

I would be glad if some of the MFT Jamcore Trainers could clear some of this up for me..

Thnx,

It doesnt have to be on a machine either ladies and gents, so dont dread getting on an elliptical or treadmill or what have you.
It can be anything you enjoy. Running in the park, walking the mountains, for us college folk, it can be treking around campus all day long :) with our 10-20lb backpacks

Cardio is Not Optional

David Berman's picture

First - it's important to define the difference between cardio and aerobic work. Typically, cardio is thought of as being done at a higher intensity level (i.e. 80% of max heart rate or above) than aerobic work, with greater emphasis on working and developing the cardiovascular system. Aerobic work is typically thought of as lower intensity work. The "pure" definition of aerobics has to do with the energy system being used during work.

Most people will either do short duration cardio/high intensity work or longer duration aerobic/lower intensity work to stimulate fat burning. But my thoughts are that most people do things incorrectly with regard to getting optimal results!

I am in full agreement with Jamo - doing aerobic work is not optional, it's required to be in shape and to bodybuild properly. Consider it an foundational function builder - with good aerobic fitness, you will be able to perform resistance training in the most effective way possible with no limitations due to cardiovascular insufficiency. The best way to gain muscle mass and be lean is to do the workouts that stimulate muscle mass and to not get "fat" in the first place.

The final word, however, is simply to pay attention to how you respond to training. You must be your own scientist and laboratory. Find what works best for you by doing things and keeping good records. In time, you'll know precisely what you need to do to be in the best shape you possibly can. Good luck!

cardio to be able to grow , its a myth that Cardio will slow your growth . Of course the duration of Cardio needs to be to a minimum ! I use to do 30 minutes after my workout three times a week to stay in decent shape and grow ! You reading Flex WTF , that magazine is targeted to Bodybuilders and some of the Bodybuilders are unhealthy Lot ! They hate cardio off season , thats why they get really overweight and can't diet for a show .The ones who stay in shape are the ones who always get in great shape for shows ! You can't burn muscle if you eating enough protein , so don't be afraid to eat 5 to 6 small balanced meals / Protein Carbs daily !

Hey Jamo, Thnx for the

Hey Jamo,

Thnx for the quick reply to my blog.. Good info, realy helps me a lot to know that it is possible for me to grain muscle while maintaining my cardio fitness with about 2- to maybe, like you said, 30 minutes of cardio a few times a week.

So this would help me to keep my bodyfat at a resonable level without losing any lean body mass? thats realy great to hear. To be honest, i always kinda had doubts that cardio would burn muscle as fast as some of these magazines claimt it would, however i never knew for sure.

like you said, 5 or 6 balanced meals is actually something I've been doing for about 2 years now, and its true that this realy works for me, probably with everyone.. lol

Thanks Jamo,
