How do I start?

michelle sharwood's picture

My husband calls me "Chubby Cheeks" and he does not mean my face!!!!

I am 49, 5 feet 3 inches in height and weigh 75 Kilos at the moment (2.25 pounds to 1 Kilo)!!! Way too much for my frame! Three years ago I had extensive abdominal surgery (3 times) and have a hanging tummy as a result. In SA we call it a BOEP!!! (Beertum to you!) Even after having had two very large babies, and in spite of having added over 20 K's during each pregnancy, my tummy was still flat, with no stretch marks at all. After each pregnancy I was back to my normal weight within 6 months, at about 55 to 60 kilo's.

Since the surgery I have had major depression, and am struggling to get back to what I used to be. I need to rebuild my energy and vitality, especially as my parents are living with us and both are struggling with cancer! They need me now, and I need to be strong for them.

I unfortunately have never eaten a lot, really only one meal a day. The result is that my body is in Starvation mode continuously, and everything I eat goes straight to the bum! I actually eat very healthy, lots of vegetables and salads, with a little bit of meat. I do not eat breads or lots of carbohydrates. I unfortunately am a CHOCOHOLIC!!!, and in no way can start my day without an infusion of at least 2 cups of very strong coffee - no coffee, stay out of my way!!!

My goal is to loose all the flab that has built up during my period of depression, as well as all the extra weight. I need to find some sort of excercise to strengthen my core, as well as my damaged abdominal muscles. I have too much fat, compared to muscle. I need to get rid of the cellulite that has built up all around my body.

Where do I start? What do I do?

Please help!

Hormonal hell

tribe doc's picture

Hi Michelle,
I am struck by some of the things you have mentioned-no appetite, chocoholic, morning fatigue to the extreme, etc-and your history of having uterine cancer-I imagine you had a total hysterectomy with removal of your ovaries and two other surgeries as well. All of this makes for a good chance you have multiple low hormone levels - little estrogen, no progesterone which will predispose you to weight gain, and very probably low DHEA and testosterone which will decease your energy levels, your sense of well being, and increase your body fat while decreasing your muscle mass and giving you increased abdominal fat. Finally, your symptoms suggest either a thyroid deficiency or more likely adrenal fatigue which I have seen many times when someone has been through a lot in terms of surgery and health challenges.
Until your probable hormone deficiencies are addressed you will have an extremely hard time even with the good suggestions of the other tribe members-its like trying to drive a car fast with a flat tire (maybe two!).
Once you have balanced your hormones, I personally would suggest a nutritional detox program to restore your digestive system to health. Once again, having been through as much as you have, I would be surprised if it was not out of balance and could benefit from a gentle but thorough cleaning. I guarantee you will feel the difference.

hormonal Hell

michelle sharwood's picture

Hi Doc,

Yes, I had an almost total hysterectomy, although I still have a partial ovary.

About six months ago I decided to see a doctor about the problems that I was going through, only to have the youngster recommend that I see a Psychiatrist and use anti depressants! I refused, for I knew that is not what I needed and what was wrong with me. Well to cut a long story short, I was accused of wasting his time!

I eventually saw a gyneacologist to ran all different tests on me, and he has started me on hormonal treatment. Since then I have been like a brand new person, I am sleeping better, have more energy and a lot more courage to face the day!

That was when I had a good look at myself and realised really what had happened to me! It was really a bit of a shock, I can assure you!

I do not know if the product I am using has any testosterone (it somehow doesn't sound right for a woman!?) I am using Evorel 75 (patches), manufactured by Janssen-Cilag, if by chance you know the product. I have not had any side effects, as when I was younger and on the pill, I had tremendous migraines. I was very nervous about using HRT, worried that the migraines would start again, but so far so good. I have also added calcium with Vit D3 tablets and also Omega-3 capsules. I was a woman who never took any pills in any form, even for migraines, and I am having to force myself to take these.

Would you be able to tell me if Evorel is the correct product, or should I use something else? I am now eating several tiny meals a day, mostly fruit, veggies and salad, with a little bit of cereals in the morning, and protein added at night. I have to cook for the whole family at night, especially a son with hollow leg bones that need to be filled (he is an absolute gannet!), so that is basically the only time I do have some protein - (meat). I enjoy some protein in the form of yoghurt and feta cheese, as well as fat free milk (Yuck, that should not be allowed to be called milk, it is water with a milk flavouring!).

What form of nutritional detox program are you talking about? i did basically eat a balanced diet, just not enough.

With regards

Michelle

Another Piece of the Puzzle

David Berman's picture

Lots of great info and motivation provided by the experts here at MFT... I hope to add a bit of wisdom by picking up where Clark began. Regarding your history of abdominal surgeries - there may be some things you can do to get your abdominal musculature to "re-engage". Clark's suggestion is a fantastic starting place. The Trasversus Abdominis (TA) is the deepest of your four ab muscles - and the one that's more responsible for core stability. Sucking in your belly button and holding is an excellent exercise. If you find that difficult to do, here's a less challenging starting place:

Lay down on your back, bend your knees with feet flat on the floor. Put your hands on your tummy. Flatten your lower back so that it pushes against the floor. Hold that flattened back position throughout each set. Do up to 30 repetitions of sucking your tummy in (as if you were pulling your belly button back to your spine), hold for 1 second, then relax. Remember not to let your lower back come off of the floor. Once you can do 1 set of 30, add another set. Work up to 3 sets of 30 repetitions.

This exercise will help you engage (or re-engage) your TA. Do these a few times a day (i.e. do 3 sets of 30 three times per day).

This exercise is a great starting place to get your deep ab muscles doing their job. Good luck!!

You seem to be on the right track!

Clark Bartram's picture

Half of getting where you want to be is having a solid support team and you seem to be building one here on MFT. Continue to lean on the supportive community and take your fitness program one day, one meal at a time. Eat more BTW! :)
As far as your core is concened the best thing you can do is constantly pull your stomach in just below the waist line. While you are in line anywhere make a conscious decision to pull it in and keep it tight...while driving and anything else you do! You need to strengthen your TA (Transverse Abdiminous) and the best way is to simply do what I just explained.
Hang in there be strong and keep your coffee. I am a 2 cup a day guy myself!!

All jokes aside, Clark, thanks so much for the advise, and for giving me your support. You have given me a brilliant idea, no chance of having anyone in stitches of laughter anymore.

Hello there! I just wanted to drop by and give you a little motivation. Very proud of you for taking the intitial steps towards your health. You already have a full plate when it comes to your everyday routine so having balance may seem difficult. It is true that through eating healthier and incorporating exercise in your life you will feel better BUT, do not forget how important it is to know how to destress yourself. I have been a life coach and trainer for many years and I can honestly say that all of the workouts and organic foods in the world don't compare to a clear, calm, and peaceful mind. Some ways to feel like you have acheived your mini goals would be to journal not only what you are eating but your thoughts and tasks for the day. I am happy that you are taking time to do something for you! Us women have a hard time doing that, especially when we have so many others to care for. I GET THAT! So if you ever need any food ideas, workouts, or a place to vent your stresses I am here for you. Have a great Labor Day!
Sincerely,
carey

I am going to have a quiet think a little later, and then send you a long list of questions, -

but right now this woman needs to make supper to feed the family!!

Never stops, does it?

what is available to me

michelle sharwood's picture

I have been doing no training at all since I have had the surgery, although there are two fully equipped gyms that I can join.

Where special foods and supplements are concerned, I prefer to eat completely and wholly natural foods, with as little as possible processed foods.

The only supplements that I add to my diet is calcium and omega 3. I do ingest a lot of protein in the form of milk and cheese, with a little bit of meat, but mostly vegetables and salads. Not really a bit fruit eater, except as juices.

I am really a newbie here, with absolutely no idea where to start! But I am totally dedicated to do something for myself, as I am really unhappy with the way I look now!

Hi Michelle, You ask how you

Jamie Yu's picture

Hi Michelle,

You ask how you start? You have already begun by making a conscious decision to change the way you look not only to maximise your health but to also your life to! Congratulations by choosing to change your life for the better.

I could lie and say your journey will be really easy, but it won't.... but guess what?

You have Jamo and myself and all of the MFT crew to enthuse you, motivate you, educate you and support you in your goals. You have a massive resource available at your fingertips and one of the best fitness/life motivators and trainers in this business. Mr Nezzar himself.

All I will say is 'little by little'... for example, you say you only eat once per day? You already answered your question as to why it goes to your bum when you only eat one meal per day. We are mammals and as such the body will fight for survival when places in a compromised position...
All your calories minimal as they are will be used as storage so that you have energy for your day to day activities but if it knows that there aren't any excess calories to find for energy thereafter it will do something to hold on to those minimal calories. If you eat only once per day then your body will slow down alot of metabolic processes such as fat burning.

Thats not to mention the nutrient deficiency you will have from lack of quantity of quality food. Imagine your body as a car, a really suped up expensive car, what happens if you don't fuel it up or give it vital water and oils in the engine. It either won't perform or won't perform well. If you're also ill how can you train, if you can't train how can you lose that extra weight. It's a vicious circle.

Be like a deer and graze not like a bear and gorge. Most deer you find are lean and muscular whilst many bears carry excess fat. Follow this principle. Balanced meals-some good fats, high fiberous complex carbs and lean sources of protein and don't forget your veggies and fruit. Several meals every 2-3 hours through out the day and try to drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day minimum.

Portion sizes for the carbohydrates and protein? Carbohydrates the size of your hand and protein the size of your palm as many veggies as you want! Don't be afraid that extra meals will create more fat, they will keep your metabolism stoked and help increase muscle tissue. The extra muscle tissue you carry will mean the more your body will be profficient at burning fat.

There are lots of vids and blogs on training on here especially on training for the lady for extra tips.

I'm sorry I can't be any more detailed on this. But I know man who can!

Good luck and best wishes and I hope to hear more from you in the future.

My bad eating habits

michelle sharwood's picture

Hi there Jamie!

Good of you to get back to me so quickly, it is really very much appreciated!

Yeah, I know that I should be eating more, but I get up in the morning at six and start running from there! All of a sudden the evening arrives and I have forgotten to eat all day! The problem is that I never feel hungry at all, so I forget.

My health has been clear since about 18 months ago, I have had the all clear from the specialists. As you must have deduced, I had uterine cancer, but what really got me down was the extensive scarring that resulted from the surgery! Yes I know that makes me sound very vain, but I am very feminine, and could not stand what it did to my self image.

How do I start eating proper meals, especially as I am never hungry? My mom is constantly after me to eat properly. Ever since I can remember, since a very young child, I have always eaten the way I do now. Obviously when I was younger and fitter, it did not affect me very badly, but obviously now that I am older, I am paying for it.

My diet is basically healthy, just not enough!

Kind regards

Michelle

I am determined that I will return to what I was

hey there, Well as I said in

Jamie Yu's picture

hey there,

Well as I said in the previous comment... 'little by little'. The optimum way would be to eat small and often, like every 2-3 hours of your waking parts of your day. However jumping from like one meal a day to several would be hard going on you mentally and also on your digestive system. Do it slower. Build up to 2 meals per day and get yourself in that frame of mind then progress on when you feel ready. Its better than just one, right?

Its like training in the gym, I will always try to progress but if I could move x amount of weight easily I wouldn't add on another say 20Ib of weight the following time I do the exercise. I'd add say 5Ib a time.

Ever heard if you fail to plan you plan to fail? Prepare your food the night before and then if you need to put it in plastic boxes and label it with a time on it. Its kinda a psychological thing then. When you take medication that you doctor prescribes and you have to take it at certain times of the day? Same principle here. This way if you carry your food around with you and set you alarm your will know its time to take 12.30pm's meal etc. Its kind of clinical and you may or may not want to do this for the rest of your life but its a good way to ease you into a 'routine'.

You say you have no appetite? That's because your body is in homeostasis now. You've been surviving on just one meal per day for such a long time then it isn't expecting anything else so it won't want anything else.

Try liquid supplements such as protein/carb meal replacements. EAS do a myoplex lite product which again is as it says, not to heavy on your stomach and lower in calories then other brands and types. You can try to have 2 of these a day on top of your other meal you have but space them out. Its not perfect but its a start.

Also one more thing. Micronutrients. Are you getting enough? Try taking in extra B vitamins. Vit b12 is fantastic for building appetite. Many years ago I was getting B12 injections for my appetite as I needed to add more size for a show I was gonna do but couldn't eat any more. This defo worked. But again b12 injections are only available from your physician and under his/her guidance.

Liver is a great source of B vits as is some fish like Salmon and Trout.

New Start!

michelle sharwood's picture

Hi there, Jamie,

I have taken my first step to my new life today - I have taken out a membership at the nearest gym! I also have had breakfast for the first time in many years! Just some oat porridge, which incidently I love, but never have the time to make. Merci Maman!

Where micronutrients are concerned, I have to be very careful as I have developed an allergy to vit B6, that is why I tend to avoid taking multivitamins, etc. But I shall definately be making a plan to find some that will suit me. I am also going to start making myself small meals to take with on travels to my clients, and yes I agree nutrient drinks are definately a good idea.

I spend most of my life sitting behind a computer or the steering wheel of my car, so I need to find some sort of DISCREET exercise that I can do while at my clients' offices, I do not want them to think that I am a lunatic! Because of my job, I have definately developed chubby cheeks, and not facial ones!

I shall be keeping you all posted as I go along, and eventually when I pick up some courage, I shall post before and after pictures of myself in a bikini!

Speak to you all soon,

Kind regards

Michelle

Hi Michelle

Jamo Nezzar's picture

First sorry for the delay to answer your blog , as you know this site takes a lot of my time on the top of that I have to work to earn a living .
Now as far as your situation is concerned , what you need to do is get in the right frame of mind first . I know its easy said then done ! But I think you are already there as you have made the commitment and you asked for help thats a good thing ....now all you have to do is follow up .
The first thing that you need to focus on is Your environment , you heard of the old saying " YOU ARE THE PRODUCT OF YOUR OWN ENVIRONMENT " , Start cleaning the fridge , take all the stuff that is bad for you , make your life simpler , even your house simpler . If you have any clutter get rid of it , something you don't need give it away to charity or something and start FRESH .
Second : Make your self a commitment that you will take one day at the time , one workout at the time , one meal at the time and commit to it .
When you catch yourself about to fall back into a bad habit , just stop and ask yourself this question ; Why I shouldn't do fall back ? and I'm sure you will have many answers to your own question .
There is a lot of Info on training and nutrition out there that tells you , DO THIS and DO THAT and YOU SHOULDN'T DO THIS and TAKE THIS SUPPLEMENT and DRINK THIS AMAZING JUICE FROM THE DEPTH OF AMAZON and so on !
The only thing I can tell you here is nothing beat basics
We will teach you how to workout properly and eat properly , YOU CANNOT DIET as DIETS DO NOT WORK! YOU NEED TO ADOPT A HEALTHY LIFE STYLE to the point when you happy and healthy to go eat that pizza and piece of cake without feeling guilty .
now here is the scoop on how to do it :
Your workout is The JamCore Beginner workout its downloadable to your video ipod scroll down and learn it by heart , here is the link to it :
http://www.myfittribe.com/jamcoretraining/men/beginner-workout.html
You start slow three times a week one day on/ one day off ..your off days you will do 30 minutes cardio in the morning walking or elliptical you need to pace yourself . Up the cardio to 40 minutes on week 3/4 then up it a gain to an hour on week 5/6/7/8
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE WEEK END OFF , GO FOR A HIKE OR A BIKE RIDE !
Once you do this for eight weeks .. I WILL GIVE YOU SOMETHING ELSE TO DO !

As far as eating ;
Focus on the following :
Breakfast : Oatmeal , whole wheat toast , Organic low sugar cereal , Fruits, low fat yogurt , Egg white ...
mid morning Snacks; Fruits , Protein shake , Low carbs protein bars ( make sure they low in sugar alcohol )
Lunch : Grilled chicken or fish . brown rice , Yam, Salads with balsamic dressing , veggies ,, Fruits
Mid afternoon Snacks again : same as the mid morning
Dinners : Low in carbs ...just stick to Salad veggies and white meat !

Now you need to eat at least 5 small meals a day to keep your metabolism functioning to burn fat ! REMEMBER WHAT MAKES YOU ACT AND REACT AND MOVE IS YOUR MUSCLES , IF YOU DON'T FEED THEM THEY WONT BURN THE FAT YOU HOLDING !
NOW THIS IMPORTANT !!!!!
I WANT YOU TO STOP THINKING ABT THE PAST AND HOW U USE TO LOOK LIKE , YOU NEED TO BE SELFISH AND START FOCUSING ON YOUR SELF IF YOU WANT THINGS TO CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT MAKE THIS CHANGES HAPPEN , AND OF COURSE WE HERE TO GUIDE YOU ! Sorry for the delay ! Jamo

How do I start?

michelle sharwood's picture

Hi Jamo,

I hope that I did not give you all a wrong idea of my husband? He is really very supportive, if he had not been I would not be here today! I just used a little joke from him that was actually said with a lot of love (and laughter from both us) to accentuate how I really feel about my butt!

My kids will divorce me if I empty the fridge of all the things that are bad for me! I shall just have to be very disciplined, and make sure that I stick to a correct eating plan, and avoid all the things that are wrong, such as too much cheese and lactose products, and no red meat! etc.

Thank you so much for all the support, and good advise, and I know that I will make it with you guys around to motivate me.

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!!

Michelle

Thats excellent! My job also

Jamie Yu's picture

Thats excellent! My job also is pretty much sitting on my behind all day whilst I talk to corporate clients about their medical insurance etc etc. I try to take an hour or two for myself. If you're job won't permit it then do things in your day to day activities that you would never normally do. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, when you take a lunch break take a walk or you could jog also. Alot of people now use their lunch period to exercise. Its actually becoming a bigger thing here in the UK now, which I think is ace.

At your level right now you only need 30mins maximum to yourself a day. I'm Sure you can find that.

Porridge is excellent. Its my breakfast of choice. If you can try to add some natural nuts like almonds and walnuts. Excellent source of good fats which will actually help you burn more fat would you believe!

Well done to you anyway!
