What are some good snacks?

indianmusclemachine's picture

I was just wondering what are some good snacks that I can take to class? I eat peanuts or walnuts everyday. Are there any other healthy snacks out there that I can eat which are pretty low in carbs? I just want to eat something to keep my metabolic rate up between my main meals. I am getting sick of peanuts and walnuts.

Here are some personal favorites (and speaking of Edamames, ironically iI had some last night... they're so good!! I've been missing out for a while now ;)):
low-carb choices in BOLD

all natural, raw & organic
+ raw, unsalted mixed nuts (trader joes)
+ dried fruit & nut trail mix (trader joes)
+ slices of Ezekiel bread; Sesame, original, or cinnamon-raisin (flourless, sprouted-grain "bread"; trader joes)
+ dried Goji berries (whole foods, trader joes)
+ apples
+ oranges/ grapefruit
+ brown rice cakes (lite or dense)
+ edamames
+ soy "nuts"
+ popcorn (pop it first of course ;), then throw it in some baggies)

a lil' more processed, but still great!!
+ kashi golean cereal (throw some in little baggies)
+ kashi golean Vanilla Oatmeal (prepackaged)
+ Cheerios (recently inaugurated with the www.wholegrainscouncil.org stamp!!)
+ string cheese
+ kashi granola (a bit higher in sugar, but excellent for during the mornings or around your workouts)
+ kashi tasty-little-chewies (chewy granola bars; high fiber, totally whole grains)
+ kashi tasty-little-crunchies (crunchy granola bars; high fiber, & of course, whole grains)
+ kashi Cookies!!
(---Kashi---)
+ beef jerky
+ you could always throw an MRP into a water bottle and bring that with you. I advocate the whole natural foods firstly. They're still totally convenient.
+ "Pure Protein" protein bars (sugar alcohols)

NOTE: Trader Joes has an entire section devoted to raw, unsalted nuts (and salted, dry roasted)... it also has almost one milliion different variations of all natural trail mix. They're just amazing!!!!! (they do have a bit of added sugar on the dried fruit, but its not significant as its not much off from the sugar content you'd get with the pure fruit itself, if this makes sense)

Snacks

Take some edamame...it's one of my most perfect foods!! LOL
And it tastes great too...

You could also try a small piece of fruit...only about 15 or 20 grams of carb, and some of this is fiber. Not sure why you necessarily want to avoid carbs anyway though (you knew that was comin').

How about a yogurt or some string cheese...these will keep, at least long enough to get to class.

Hey Brian, I'm not really

Hey Brian,

I'm not really trying to avoid carbs, but I am dieting down right now. I just dont want to bring snacks with over 20 grams of carbs with me between my meals where I am going to eat carbs again 2 hours or so later.

Thanks man,

Jason
