How important is a diet for definition?

hammama's picture

I want more definition but I don't have a specific diet. I eat every 3 hours and I don't eat fast food or drink soda or juices or any sugar containing products (except for chocolate) will that get me where I want to be?

Thanks a lot to you all!

I hate that word...

'DIET' I'm sometime guilty of using myself although I mean the total opposite to the exact definition.

The word 'Diet' is something to me that is deemed as a 'temporary solution' and involves alot of sacrifice and willpower in a effort to eat or not to eat. I read this somewhere which struck a chord...

"Dieting...Its like holding your breath, at sometime your willpower is going to give out...its just a question when do you open your mouth again?"

Don't starve yourself, eat eat eat!

Just make good choices and live it 'every' day. I see this when people diet to go on holiday, starve themselves, overtrain.. to lose 20Ib or what not only to put it all on again whilst on holiday or when they return home. Why can't we all eat healthily every day? It doesn't have to be hell.

a difference between eating clean and dieting . to achieve definition you need to learn about the food you eat and the timing . You need to train your self to eat 5 times a day ( small meals ) and train at least three times a week while adding a cardio activity to your weight program .
It takes a long time to learn how your body work , and if you don't TRY to do things properly you are waiting time .
Start by documenting everything and BLOG IT here and we can help you . I find people always asking the same questions , without even trying to follow what we tell them . Im not saying YOU ARE , but honestly without consistency you WILL NEVER GET ANYTHING IN LIFE . So to answer your question , its trial and error try what you doing for 10 weeks and see the results .
By the way chocolate won't get you defined

Yeh.

I'm definitely going to cut back on chocolate. And add 2 days of cardio.

I personally hate "diets" I think clean eating is the best. like You choose 5 different breakfast meals. 5 different snacks. 5 different lunches. 5 different snacks. 5 different dinners. 2 different protein shakes.
to me thats easier because you don't get bored of the same food everyday... day in an day out.
make sure all the 5 choices of food You have has around the same protein / carbs / and fats.
like meal 1 for example I'll have these choices
1 - 4 egg whites. 1 egg yolk. 1.5 cup NO FAT milk with some oatmeal
choice 2 - 1 protein shake with oatmeal in it
choice 3 - 4 egg whites 1 yolk and 1 cup yogurt (the yogurt has protein and carbs in it)
choice 4 - 1 protein shake with blue berries and bannans.
choice 5 - 3 egg yolk. 1 cup blueberries. 1 bannana

Hmm

"okay" eating habits and exercise will get you to a healthy weight.

But diet and exercise is what will take you from 'normal' to having very defined abdominals.
Diet in this context is very healthy eating. ANd its all about calorie monitoring. You really need to be consuming less than maintenance calories almost everyday, or fluctuate so your net calories taken in over the course of a week was 3500 less than maintenance (or more). 3500/wk makes you lose 1lb a week.

The Diet is Key!!

Definition is a tricky game. There is a "for sure" approach for the "look" which is low carb, high protien, watch the calories as said above. Having said that, take a look at what works for you. A good approach is carb cycling. I have article if you'd like on it. One thing you def. want to do also is 45-60 min of cardio first thing on an empty stomach. 4-6 small meals a day, maybe more. WATER+WATER and WATER. Flush it ALL out.

But bro...Mind set. It's all your mind set. It is so easy to feel down, low energy, or impatient with getting defined and ripped. But you want to keep a good positive outlook, set goals, and watch it melt off. Experiment for 8-10 weeks. Try some carb cycling. If your like me, for a while you'll get more energy from keeping your carbs low and fats higher. Everybody is different, but we can all learn from each other. Let me know if you'd like me to post some good article for you.

That would be greatly appreciated...

Without the proper diet, you won't achieve your goals!

My take on all this is that whether you lift heavy or light, if you don't control the types of foods you eat, when you eat it & how much of it you eat, you won't get anywhere near them! If you want to cut fat, do what Ajablin said. For some people, they don't have to so anything but change their diet - which means that they don't even need a fat burner.I can personally attest to the fact that training first thing in the morning is another way to metabolize your body fat for obvious reasons. One thing that worked for me was taking in a protein shake with 2g sugar & almost no fat 1-2hrs before your morning workout, lifting heavy for 12-15 reps, followed by cardio & then i'd begin my day with complex carbs & egg whites for breakfast (of course, like Ajablin said above, fish oils also play a huge role in burning fat (& so does drinking cold water throughout your day). Coming up with the number of caloried per day is totally a personal thing as you would imagine so make sure you read up & try different things. Keep staying away from simple carbs as much as possible & although eating fruits is very healthy for you, watch how much you eat. Also, the timing of the types of foods you eat is very important. For instance, many people find that not eating any carbs after noon helps. When i'm cutting, I limit my carbs after 2-3pm because of my metabolism. And make sure you get in the veges that contain a high % of water. Sorry if I went a bit over board... good luck with your cutting

From what I hear...

...getting defined and lean is all about diet. You have to eat clean, often, and pay close attention to nutrition. Also, staying well hydrated is a must. Now, I'm no fitness expert (yet), but from reading and watching every article and video that's come through here for the past six months, that's the impression that I get. Hopefully, Jamo will come put in his two cents. That guy's is the master!
