Wheat Germ

FIREBAT's picture

All of us know by heart that Oatmeal is a great food and it is a must have in our breakfasts. Yesterday I was doing my grocery shopping nearby the oatmeal section I saw a product called wheat germ. It's nutritional values are pretty good (300 calories, 30gr protein, 45 gr carbs 3.5 gr fat per 100 grams) Am I re-inventing the wheel is this a well known product? Or is this a nutritionally superior alternative to oatmeal that I can substitute in my meal plan?

i wish we had it here...it

I add it to my fat free yogurt all the time... also I add it to some of my shakes and it blends well. I have also added it to my egg white dishes. My 2 cents...

hmm

Gosh its been so long since I've had wheat germ (or ground up flaxseed for that matter!) that i forget what it tastes like. Is it a grainy taste or maybe a nutty taste? Does it give a crunch or is it softer?

next time I work i'll check to see if we have any (I work at GNC, ,sometimes we carry stuff like that when its considered "in season")

Wheat Germ...

Hey Stevers... love the wheat germ and it isn't too grainy but is a little nutty... i would say the texture is alot like ground flaxseed but with a little better taste IMO. I just started using ON's Oats N' Whey and it has a very similar texture.

Great food!

It's a great food source but good luck trying to eat it like oatmeal :-p. if you can them I'll be impressed, but its a great topping to many foods. You'd have to experiment to see what you like it on.

Taste Experiment

FIREBAT's picture

This morning I tried 25 grams of wheat germ 25 grams of oatmeal some flax seed and I added a scoop of vanilla flavored whey to make sure grain blend tastes better than cardboard. The result was much better than I expected. Tomorrow I will also add some kiwi fruit or strawberries, I'll blog how it works but wheat germ seems to be a permanent insert to my breakfast

If it works :-p

That's great! Wheat germ is an amazing addition to any diet and if you can incorporate that much into your "lifestyle change" then your body is going to love you!

I'm glad you brought this question up, I am going to revisit wheat germ because i completely forgot about it! (It used to be one of those 'breakfast additions' like I did with flaxseeds or flaxseed oil).
