Waist to Height Ratio
You’ve heard the horrors of abdominal fat - people who carry their weight in their stomachs have a greater risk for cancer and many other diseases. How do you know if you fall into this category? Use this simple calculation.
First, measure your waist circumference. To ensure you get an accurate measurement, use soft tape, make sure your belly is bare (take off your shirt, lower pants/skirt, etc.) and try to use a mirror if possible. Press your fingers into your torso and move along the hip bone until you find the top curve of the bone. You want to measure around the highest point (usually near your belly button). Do not suck in and make sure the tape is not squeezing your body. Stand up with your back straight and gently exhale as you measure.
Once you have your measurement, divide waist circumference by height. If your waist-to-height ratio is 0.5 or higher, regardless of whether you are male or female, this is an indication that you have intra-abdominal fat. A waist size of greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women indicates intra-abdominal fat as well.
