Gym Members Can Make a Difference
How many times have you seen someone doing an exercise incorrectly? How often have you wondered if you were the one doing something wrong? Many gym members go through the motions without being absolutely certain they are working out correctly. Regrettably, people will often continue using the equipment the only way they know how – right or wrong.
As time goes by, members who basically taught themselves how to workout will begin to gain confidence in their training based on one simple fact – no one has told them any differently.
As you workout in a health club surrounded by many seemingly experienced members, surely someone would tell you if they saw you doing something wrong. Right? Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Many people may notice, but are unsure how to approach someone.
Normally, correction is more than welcomed. Although the old spa days were filled with people just going through the motions and treating a gym more like a social club, things have changed. Time is valuable and people aren’t eager to waste it.
So how can we all help? First, our experienced gym members should be aware of what’s going on around them. We should never be too busy to help point someone in the right direction – even if it’s simply walking them to the water fountain. Our hospitality can really help a new member feel comfortable and welcomed.
Next, even if you don’t have the answers, you can ask an employee for assistance. The employee will most likely be eager to help and appreciate you noticing the member in need.
Another way we can help each other is to share. Sharing gym equipment, exercise tips, and success stories with other members can be a great way to spread knowledge and encouragement. Even if you aren’t the most knowledgeable one in the gym, you may know more than someone next to you and have an opportunity to make a difference.
Last but not least, don’t be afraid to ask. If you find yourself feeling unsure about an exercise, stop what you are doing and ask for help. Whether you ask a fellow member or an employee, it’s not worth the risk of hurting yourself or wasting your time. Once you get the correct information, then you may have the opportunity to help someone else.
