Getting the Most Out of Your Fruits

Summer is here and your favorite fruits are in season, so it’s a great time to discover the best types of produce to add to your diet. To maximize everything from the taste, freshness, and nutrient value of your fruits, follow these tips:
- Heaviness – the fruits that feel heaviest are the juiciest
- Texture – test individual fruits for the texture they have when ripe. A spongy avocado is perfect; however, a spongy kiwi is too ripe.
- Ripeness – store ripe fruits in the refrigerator to maximize their shelf life. Oranges and cherries can last up to two weeks in the fridge, but berries and grapes can go bad in just a few days.
- Preparation – to get the best flavor and most nutrients out of your fruit, prepare fresh produce about an hour before you plan on serving it.
- Recycling – The peels from apples and pears and the zest (thin, outermost layer of oranges and limes) can be finely sliced and added to jazz up any dish.
