Sports Spotlight: Hiking
Whether you’re on vacation near a hiking hotspot or happen to live in a place where trails abound, hiking can be a great way to change up your cardio routine. Depending on your stats and the intensity and duration of your hike, you can burn 500 calories or more in an hour of hiking (based on a 150-lb. person). Trails with several hills or mostly uphill climbs allow you to burn hundreds of calories more than cross-country treks.
When you go, be prepared: get the right type of hiking boot and bring plenty of water. The best shoes are mid-ankle and have a wide space for toe room. Shock-absorbing material under the heels and padding around the ankle are also crucial for hikers. A stiff sole can help prevent potential problems caused by rocky terrain. Finally, an important consideration is how heavy the shoes are, and how they feel on your foot – are your boots so heavy you get tired after walking around in them for a while? If so, try a lighter model.

Hiking rules
I love hiking so much. I can't get over it. How fit do you feel after conquering a mountain?! It's pretty rad.
Hiking
I happen to be a very avid hiker. I find that as long as I stay on the trails a good running shoe seems to be the beast for me. I always choose rocky, uneven trails to keep my ankles strong enough to avoid injury to them. During deer season when I'm off trail is when I wear my hiking boots to avoid injury. I use the inclined paths for half of the journey and the downhill ones to keep my heart rate up there when I'm too tired to go up hill anymore. I find that if I go 5 to 7 miles a day I feel very strong and fit. Then later in the day is when I lift weights. This is what works for me, I use about 1/2 stretches learned in Karate school and 1/2 in yoga class. In the summer I always make sure to check myself for ticks too... this morning I even killed a rattle snake! It had been run over by a car...a mercy killing. 1 quart of water seems to be right too take. Sometimes I take gatorade too. ENJOY! Michael T
Sounds like both..
A challenging and potentially relaxing exercise regimen. Too often i get caught up in the technological world so enjoying nature is very medicinal for me.
