National Women’s Health Week

America’s Women’s Health Week, which begins each year on Mother’s Day, recently came to a close. In honor of the public health effort to increase knowledge about women’s health, here are some tips for women based on the aims of Women’s Health Week.

LIFESTYLE: It’s the end of May, and your New Year’s resolve to quit that bad habit – be it cigarettes, drinking, or junk food – may have waned. Use this opportunity to kick-start your new life: cut out smoking, overeating, and other risky behaviors to increase your health and decrease your cancer and heart disease risks.

PREVENTION: Make that appointment – It’s vital to get check-ups and screenings at regular intervals throughout the year. It’s easy to forget in the crunch of work, family, and personal obligations, but early detection can significantly raise your chances of survival.

FITNESS: Try to exercise for at least thirty minutes per day, 3-5 days per week. Even if you need to split the workout into two or three shorter time periods, that extra activity will keep you feeling healthier and happier. Also, be sure to appreciate your body– take time off and de-stress when you need to! This can prevent burnout and fatigue.

NUTRITION: Join the movement to eat healthier, and you and your family will reap the benefits. Start small by switching to whole-grain breads, cereals, and grains and serving side dishes of steamed or grilled vegetables at dinner. Enjoy smaller portions and stock up on high-fiber foods.

good advice for women!

Thanks you Mona Liza for the good and timely tips! I'd like to add that spending more time with friends and family and less time in front of the TV, being truly proactive with your health including infrared theromgraphy for earlier detection of breast health problems, exercising as you note, and getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables (organic if possible) will all increase the chances a woman will lead a happy and healthy life
