Tips for Reducing Heartburn

Almost all of us have experienced heartburn at one time or another. Heartburn is the most common symptom of gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), also known as acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when a sphincter called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) at the lower end of the esophagus does not work properly, causing stomach acid to back up in the esophagus. Heartburn, a painful burning sensation in the chest or throat, is the result.

If you experience heartburn more than twice per week, you may have gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD). If you suffer from heartburn regularly, make sure to visit your doctor to rule out other conditions that exacerbate heartburn, such as hiatal hernia, a condition that occurs when the stomach partially sits in the chest cavity. Below are some tips to help reduce heartburn.

Tips to Reduce Heartburn

  • Lose excess weight if overweight
  • Quit smoking
  • Avoid overeating
  • Avoid eating 2-3 hours before bedtime
  • Elevate the head of your bed 4-6 inches
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals
  • Avoid tight-fitting clothes that constrict the abdomen
  • Avoid foods that may exacerbate heartburn. These include chocolate, coffee, alcohol, fried and fatty foods, mint products, carbonated beverages, citrus fruits and juices, and tomatoes
  • Avoid using aspirin, as it may exacerbate heartburn

If heartburn still remains a problem, there are other ways to reduce heartburn, including over-the-counter antacids, medications that decrease reflux or block acid production, or surgery to tighten the lower esophageal sphincter.
