Healthy Moms Make Happy Families

When I think of all the things my mother has done for me, and everything she does for my sisters, I realize how unselfish and full of love she is. I think of all the hard-earned money she spent on clothes for us when she would have loved to treat herself with something new. I also think of all the relaxing vacations she sacrificed for a high-energy weekend with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

My mom is not the only one who has made these kinds of sacrifices - most mothers do similar things every day. This is why it is so difficult for mothers to set time aside for the gym. It is hard for some mothers to put themselves first for a change - even for an hour.

Since I'm in the women's business, I hear about the many obstacles women face when it comes to fitness. One of the greatest challenges women confront is squeezing a workout in while raising a family. However, there comes a time when a mother has to take care of herself so she can take better care of her family.

It's hard to pick your child up from daycare and head straight to the gym. However, I can assure you that one hour a day spent at the gym will help you be a better mom and wife the other twenty-three hours a day. One tribe member recently said, "My husband and daughters see such a difference in my appearance, my mood and my outlook on things." Another member even told me her husband said she wasn't nearly as grouchy since she started exercising. These are perfect examples of how fitness affects more than just your waistline.

Women who are healthy have more energy for their families. One of the first victories my mom shared with me after she started exercising was how she was able to keep up with my youngest sister. More energy translates into more fun with mom.

Another side affect of increased health is increased patience - and Lord knows mothers could always use an extra dose of patience. I think of times my mom lost her patience with me and it was often a result of a stressful day. Since exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress, it only makes sense that healthy mothers seem more patient.

Finally, one of the best benefits is increased confidence. One tribe member said, "I used to feel ashamed of myself but now I hold my head up high." These types of feelings affect the rest of the family. I think of all the years my mom didn't take family photos because she didn't want any fat pictures of herself. Her lack of confidence often affected her actions and activities.

If you have been pouring yourself into your family and neglecting your own health, it's time to make a change. This Mother's Day, commit to making time for yourself so you can give your family the most priceless gift of all - a happy, healthy mom.
