Beware Corn Syrup!

tribe doc's picture

Contrary to what you may think, just because the label says "natural" does not mean it’s good for you! High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) does come from a natural source, but it is decidedly NOT good for you! High fructose corn syrup consumption leads directly to obesity. Manufactured from corn starch, this sweetener is added to hundreds of products we consume every day, including natural juice drinks, soda, cereals, energy bars, sauces, salad dressings and more. Fructose, unlike other sugars, does not cause an increase in the compound "leptin," which tells the brain when you're full. Additionally, it increases the level of "ghrelin" which stimulates your desire to eat more. Check the label-"All natural" could actually translate to "all fat"!

Whats up with Gatorade?? Did it always have HFCS and I never noticed? Or did they just start adding it to certain flavors (all flavors) ?
Wasnt Gatorade supposed to be good for you if you really need rejuvenated after an intense aerobic workout? (like sports etc)

Gatorade

Hey Bro,

Gatorade has always used high fructose corn syrup, but it didn't appear as such on the label. They have now remedied that situation and you will find it listed as high fructose corn syrup...

Gatorade is fine during longer events and post-workout (along with a smidge of protein). As I mentioned before, the type of HFCS is very close to regular table sugar. No big difference because the sugar load is relatively low anyway...and it is designed that way for better absorption.

Glad to have this resolved, haha I feel betrayed now by Gatorade!!
Just kidding, but thats very interesting to know. You said 'sugar load' is this similar to the glycemic index/load at all?

Sugar Load

Brian Zehetner's picture

No...not at all.
By sugar load, I just meant that Gatorade and other traditional sports drinks don't really have all that much sugar. Gatorade is a 6% solution and only has 14 grams in 8 oz. This is about half of what you'd find in most soft drinks...

Gotcha.

Makes sense :) THanks again.
I dont drink much else besides coffee and water anymore. I'll put the occasional energy-powder in my water. Pop is too acidic now for me, when I try to drink even a can, i stop about halfway because its unbearable >_<. I drink tea, but I havent in a while so I didnt really want to say I drink it.

hydrogenated oils

tribe doc's picture

I'm not sure about the overeating part but hydrogenated oils are to be strenuously avoided due to the fact that they lead to increased free radical damage including oxidized LDL (bad) cholesterol which is what forms plaque build up in the arteries (also known as atherosclerosis) leading to heart disease and strokes.

HFCS

kunoichiforGod's picture

I really do hate the fact that HFCS is in bread! Why do you have to sweeten bread for anyways? Another thing is, I can't stand the fact that it's in gatorade too! I need to find a liquid replenishable energy source that doesn't have HFCS in it. Do you know of any drink that doesn't have HFCS?

Thank you.

I avoid buying anything with this ingredient in it, it surprises me how many things are made with HFCS. I've noticed a change in my body ever since I've started doing this.
