Obesity Epidemic 2050
The majority of Britons could become obese by 2050 unless major changes are made in our “obesogenic” society. A study compiled by 250 experts has concluded that excess weight has now become the norm in our society where energy-dense and cheap foods, labour saving devices, sedentary jobs and motorized transport are widespread.
Obesity rates are currently increasing every year, and if the current trends continue, by 2050, 60% of men, 50% of women, and 26% of children will be obese. Cases of Type 2 diabetes will raise by 70%, stroke rates will increase by 30%, and cases of coronary heart disease will raise by 20%. Obese people die an average of 9 years before someone of normal weight.

The authors of the study noted that anti-obesity campaigns have not been effective, and stressed the importance that every level of society needs to be involved in a campaign against obesity.
Health Secretary Alan Johnson stated, “As this report starkly demonstrates, people in the UK are not more gluttonous than previous generations and individual action alone will not be sufficient. Solutions will not be found in exhortations to greater individual responsibility or in the futility of isolated initiatives.” He mentioned that a national debate is the best strategy to work out alternatives.
It is unlikely that people will give up modern technology, and for many, being sedentary is a normal part of daily life. Change will only happen when the majority of people come to realize that being active and eating nutritious foods on a daily basis are necessary to stop this crisis.

lol
...I just came to a realization: gas running out is a godsend. Why? because by 2050 people wont be able to drive their cars due to the lack of gasoline and therefore they'll probably get off the couch and walk/run/bike places... Oh, wait, by then we'll have figured out a reliable alternative fuel source...nvm haha

Obesity
I used to weigh 225... this morning I weigh 160.6. If I can lose it ANYONE can! The answer to the obesity epidemic is to STOP CODDLING THESE FAT PIGS! No one gets fat without eating too much. The fact that they are FAT PIGS! is their own fault. To lose it I used to stand naked in front of a full length mirror slapping my FAT PIG BELLY and saying " you fat pig... you fat pig "... Using false words like " plus size, big, weight challenged " etc is what is causing this epidemic. You can not have the determination to lose the FAT by ducking the issue because by doing that you fail to effectively deal with the base problem. Addiction to overeating is what it is, and you will never deal with any addiction by running from it ,you have to meet it head on, and defeat it. There is a woman I feel so sorry for...she lives in my building. Every day when I leave for my walk I see the poor thing. sitting there in the lobby... having her breakfast...4 packs of ho ho's. I guess I should feel thankful for the extra energy she gives me for my workout but I'm too busy despising her FAT PIG BODY! See? Thats the determination it takes to lose the FAT... You have to be committed and relentless... but whats your choice? Diabetes? OK Now since my soapbox crumbles beneath me I must lift and make my morning appearance on the mountaintop! GAWD that felt good...my favorite subject! lol! Michael T
Even little
things like taking the cart back after shopping, parking further from where you have to go in to your work or school, getting up to change channels on the television, and on and on and on.... It is really sad to me to see so many kids at school only 13 and 14 years old be so over weight. It is getting worse in elementary levels too.
I can remember when I was a kid, we played and did creative stuff...... education is still the best preventative defense we have to fight obesity; that and being a good example. What may save us time in some ways, can slow us down in others.
Moderation and discipline in our ways of thinking are our best friends.
great article, Jamo!

True ..

metabolic resistance
Looks like things in Britain are following developments in the US-too much high glycemic carbs and not enough fruits, vegetables and lean protein. I'll bet there has been an increase in putting high fructose corn syrup in convenience foods and soda there as well. This terrible ingredient is cheap and sweet but tricks your body into thinking its still hungry so you consume even more of these" instant fat thighs" carbs. Its a crime!
