Say No to NO Products!!
You’ve seen them in every fitness magazine on the market. You’ve seen them in GNC and in the supplement shop at your local gym. You may have even seen them on TV. What am I talking about? Those ads…you know the ones, touting the nitric oxide (NO) products as the next big thing in sports nutrition. To be honest, the mechanism seems plausible enough.
- Take a supplement that is a precursor to nitric oxide.
- The subsequent increase in nitric oxide causes vasodilation of the blood vessels.
- This vasodilation increases nutrient delivery to the muscles.
- The resulting effect is increased protein synthesis, hypertrophy, decreased catabolism and improved body composition.
So the theory makes sense, but is there any research to back-up the hefty claims? Unfortunately for the marketers of these products, there’s only been one decent study on arginine alpha ketoglutarate, the active ingredient in most nitric oxide products (arginine being the precursor to NO). It was completed down at Baylor, one of the foremost research facilities in the field of sports nutrition, and the results were less than stellar. Let’s take a closer look at this study…
Campbell et al actually completed two studies in one, a pharmacokinetic study, which is of little interest to us here, and a study measuring the effects of supplementation on training adaptations in resistance-trained men (1). In this second study, 35 adult, trained men ingested either 4 gms of arginine alpha ketoglutarate (AAKG) three times daily or placebo in a random, double-blinded protocol. The men performed periodized resistance training 4 days per week, two upper body days and two lower body days. At 0, 4 and 8 weeks, the following tests were completed: blood tests, one rep max bench press, isokinetic quadriceps muscle endurance, anaerobic power, aerobic capacity, total body water, body composition and psychometric parameter tests.
Results indicate there was a significant difference in one rep bench press (19# with AAKG vs. 6# with placebo) and anaerobic power, measured with the Wingate test. That said, there were no significant changes in fat-free mass, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity or catabolic markers. In other words, strength and power improved without ANY change in muscle hypertrophy or body composition. These results seem puzzling, but it is possible that the significant change in bench press strength was due to the placebo effect. The fact that the subjects were trained may have had an effect as well, but the 13# difference in bench press max is still somewhat difficult to explain. In addition, the only other study that addressed arginine and body composition found similar results…no significant differences in fat or lean tissue loss, muscle function or growth hormone levels (2).
The irony here is that most people take NO products because they want increased muscle size and improved body composition. The products are marketed in this light, but the research doesn’t seem to support these claims. I would pass on NO products for now, until we have more definitive studies showing consistently positive results.

Glad I dont live in Brazil >_<
Yeah, I sometimes used arginine 30 minutes before my workouts and saw (could have just been mental, but i dont think it was) an increase in vascularity.

No X Creatine...
Never had creatine, but it seems really good!
Like the guy down there said... it's prohibited in brazil, but if you look for it you'll find sooner or later...
i'll get mine next week if everything goes alright!
NO really made me feel better... i got good recovering betwen sets... and my strenght rised a lil'bit
Baylor ???
Was that study done at Baylor univesity????just askin cuz thats in waco texas...(my home town)so i was just curious.....o yeah i take NO Xplode and its goooood....but i guess cuz all the stuff in it that gives you energy ....but yeah thats my fav supplement ever....
Yep!!
Baylor is one of the most respected sports nutrition research universities...go to any conference and you'll see their grad students walking around everywhere (they all wear the same shirt). LOL
The jist of the matter is that some feel better taking NO products, but the active ingredient (arginine alpha ketoglutarate) is very effective...

Makes sense......
I jumped on the NO bandwagon about a year and a half ago, so you can imagine how much money went out.....
True at first they rush is amazing, and let's face it an ice cold fizzy fruity mix seems more appealing than a hot cup of coffee.
Problme is over time, one scoop turns to two, to three, etc... But the biggest problem I had with most was that you became a slave to it's schedule, no food 2 hours prior etc....And at 50-60 bucks a bucket, wow that's a lot.
I'm with Jamo BCAA's, Glutamine, Creatine, work best, and I just use coffee if I am dragging. I also have gotten great energy from Jamo's recommendation of Cytomax.. Not to expensive and gives energy from simple carbs. I like to think of it as a Gatorade without the high fructose corn syrup.
Recently I opted to take an unopened tub of an NO product back to the store and exchange, I walked out with a 2 weeks worth, of BCAA'a, Glutamine, Whey.
Im not going to lie, I have
Im not going to lie, I have been using NO/pre workout products for a wile now. Personaly i have found that power is up but this could be because of the stims that have been in some of them. I have also found more of a pump again most likely from the caffeein. I wouldnt recomend a no product to anyone unless they where in need a of pep up for training. Just have a coffee. I have also noticed that they fade after extended use.
just my 2 cents!
peace!
I was..
..always scepticle about NO products ,,I prefer my mix of BCAA , GLUTAMINE and CREATINE ,,anytime better than NO products
Recipe????
Jamo, any chance you would share the brands and amounts you mix?
I feel better with NO
I have more strength and a fast recovery between series with NO than with Creatine (used both). Here in Brazil, Creatine is prohibited by Anvisa (same as FDA in USA) until more studies of consequences for body in long-term use. Very sad.
Well Im glad to hear that
Well Im glad to hear that Brazil are taking the sensible approach on creatine and they get my full support.
On the l'arginine front it makes you wonder how many times it will resurface in a variety of brandings and formulas as the new panacea as its been in use almost 100 years now. wouldnt it just be cheaper tho to to buy an arginine supplement and get a cheaper whey that you are not paying through the nose for due to fancy packaging and marketing?
that sux dude i would go
that sux dude i would go creatine any day of the week over a no product. Then agian its not the end of the world as you get results from good food intake and training consistance.
peace!
