The Amazing Transformations of Christian Bale

Christian Bale starting acting in British television commercials when he was 9 and had his major breakout Hollywood role in the film American Psycho in 2000. He played Patrick Bateman; a handsome, intelligent stockbroker turned serial killer who also happened to be incredibly ripped.

Then in 2004, he dropped from 180 to about 120 pounds for his role as an insomniac factory worker in the film The Machinist. He reportedly wanted to go down to 100 pounds, but the movie producers were afraid that his health would suffer too much if he lost that much weight. His diet consisted of one can of tuna and one apple per day. In an interview with IGN Entertainment, Christian said, “I'd done American Psycho, and I [bulked up] purely for that part”. “But people start just going 'oh yeah, that guy's a real workout fanatic,' and that's not me, that's Patrick Bateman. It was a nice way to kill that dead by just destroying your body completely.”

When Batman Begins was released only a year later, Christian had managed to gain almost 100 pounds, but had difficulty rebuilding the massive amount of muscle that he’d lost for his part in The Machinist. “I managed to put on a certain amount of weight just to convince them for the screen test that I wasn't a complete shrimp, but when it actually came to building muscle, I was useless,” he recalled in an interview with IGN. “I couldn’t do one push up the first day…but you have a deadline, you have an obligation…Thankfully, it wasn’t something that was as necessary or essential as something like an American Psycho thing, which was all about the vanity of the man. It was more just about being able to look capable.”

This man certainly has amazing mental strength. I give him major kudos. Thats pretty ridiculous to transform like that, and wow does he look unhealthy at 120lbs. I think this is very unhealthy and I hope, like someone else mentioned, it doesnt have long term effects on his body. I hope it was worth it for him.

I remember watching/reading an interview of his, and he mentioned how much he can't stand working out, haha. Like everyone else he'd rather be out drinking. I guess whatever the role calls for, he does it. And he does it pretty damn well...though that's gotta be disgustingly taxing on your body. I don't think it'd be worth it.

How do you not pass out just living on an apple and tuna each day?!

BTW, The Machinist was a weird freakin' movie.

I wonder if he had a personal trainer. Doesn't appear so. That's some amazing control over physical fitness and weight because I know I tried to put on some weight and all I ended up doing was putting on fat and it took me months and months to get rid of it.

I guess because he doesn't have a job or life outside of acting, he can really focus on goals when he's not in a studio role.

I just don't know how someone can yoyo like that - it seems to take extreme dedication and hours at the gym. I could never just eat a can of tuna and an apple a day. Maybe he has some freaky genetics in there too.

The whole concept of yoyoing seems incredibly unhealthy - I hope it doesn't bite him in the arse one day. At least he doesn't do it a lot.
