Quick Tip: Early Bird Breakfast

Mona Liza Reyes's picture

Are you one of those on-the-ball people who squeezes in an intense morning workout, then powers through the rest of your day? Have you been eating a balanced and nutritious breakfast before your workout? How about afterward?

Different styles work for different people, but it’s essential you get your breakfast fix at some point in the morning. Just don’t make the beginner’s mistake of thinking you can skimp on the b-fast. Even though you’re headed to the gym, you can’t just eat a Pop-Tart or drink a can of juice and think you’re fueled and ready. The best pre-workout breakfast foods are high in carbohydrates to stabilize your blood sugar throughout a workout. Grainy cereal, bread, fruit, pastas, etc. will increase your carb count. Stay away from foods that are super high in fat or fiber, since they take longer to digest. Choose the foods with moderately complex carbs and proteins, and you’ll be ready for the day!

I have always been led to believe that if I go for a run before breaky, then it sets your metabilism up for the day.
Is this not true then??????

Hmmmmm

Well the benefits of running Prior to eating are that you have no other sources of energy in your body after just waking up, so you're body is going to get its energy from your fat stores (and a tiny bit of muscle sometimes).

I wouldn't think running in the morning would make your metabolism any faster than running at any other time during the day though.

Eating right after waking up (or after you have your morning cardio) is definitely more beneficial rather than waiting a few hours to first eat. Thats because your body needs energy and your metabolism is ready, but if you do not give it anything to work with then it will slow down because it will try to conserve what it has (because it thinks you wont be eating for a long while).

Hope that helped, I sometimes take too many words to explain something :(.
