Grape Juice and Breast Cancer Risk
A recent study published in the Journal of Medicinal Foods found that an anthocyanin-rich extract from concord grapes developed by Welch’s foods has the potential to prevent breast cancer. The authors suggest that the extract and a component grape anthocyanin “have breast cancer chemopreventive potential due in part to their capacity to block carcinogen–DNA adduct formation, modulate activities of carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes, and suppress ROS in these noncancerous human breast cells” (2).
Anthocyanins are part of the flavonoid family of phytochemicals. A 2007 symposium on health benefits of berry consumption presented evidence from scientists on potential uses of anthocyanins against cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes, and bacterial infections. (1).

beware!
This study, though interesting and perhaps important (if it is repeated by a lab that does not have a financial stake in positive results like a grape juice company would) should be accepted for what it apparently concludes-one extract from grape juice MAY help prevent cancer. That is not the same as saying grape juice may help protect against cancer. It indeed may do that, but it may also be that grape juice, rather than an extract, because of its high sugar content, does not decrease the risk of cancer but actually raises it and also the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease because of the sugar content.
In short, more studies are needed.
In general, eating whole fruits is healthier than drinking the juice.
