Park your car far away. Take the stairs. You’ve heard the standard tips for working fitness into your daily schedule, but let’s face it: tips like these are boring. To truly get a jumpstart on a revolutionizing fitness plan, you need to get a little creative! Here are some tips for fitting mini-workouts into an office [or any other type of work] environment.

1. Food Prep Leg Lifts
As you blend a morning smoothie, pack lunch, or grill dinner, take advantage of the prep time to do some simple leg lifts. Stand straight and tall, then lift one of your legs to the side, front, or back. Repeat ten to fifteen times; then switch to the other leg.

2. Curbside Stretching
When you park your car, you can use the curb to stretch out your hamstrings and keep them loose just by putting a foot on the curb and stretching out the leg.

3. Cubicle Pushups
Have your own cubicle? Use your chair to do pushups. From a seated position, move forward so that your arms are the only body part touching the chair. Remain in a seated position. Bend your arms and dip down, and repeat ten to fifteen times.

4. Desktop Dumbbells
You can use ordinary office items, like a three-hole punch or instruction manual, as dumbbells. This is another one where the privacy of a cubicle might be helpful!

5. Think Twice Before You Click ‘Send’
When you write an e-mail to someone in your office, consider whether or not it’s essential that it be sent. If it’s something that could be discussed in person, get up and walk to the person’s office instead of staying sedentary and succumbing to ‘Send’.

6. Switching It Up
Go to the bathroom on a different floor of your building, so you can get some stair climbing action in.

7. Cut Your Lunch In Half
Okay, so you don’t have to literally cut your lunch in half. But if you allot half your lunch break for eating, you can spend the other half taking a walk, doing some exercises, or even hitting the gym if you have an hour break.

This list is just a start. There are literally hundreds of engaging and outside-the-box actions you can take to fit fitness into your hectic schedule. Enjoy!

Calf workout while waiting for the train

I work my calves as I wait for the train...20 times with rest periods and alternating feet positions. I am a teacher and get my students to do strength exercises or do yoga, or kids tai chi before we draw or paint.
