The secret of lactic acid burn

"Lactic Acid" has a bad rap in sports and fitness circles. It's often blamed for post workout soreness (DOMS) as well as painful muscle cramping and fatigue while exercising. The truth of the matter though, is that acidosis is caused by the build up of other ATP byproducts(1), and lactate is actually an important component of energy production during intense exercise. According to a recent study(2), lactate production retards, not causes acidosis. The study concludes that muscle fatigue would occur more quickly and performance would be impaired if muscles did not produce lactate.

So the next time you are working out with your friend or significant other and they stop and complain about "lactic acid burn", send them back to school!
